Quatre Cheminées (Four Chimneys)
Originally constructed in the 1890’s, the Quatre Cheminées (Four Chimneys) cave shelter was intended to serve as a barracks for French soldiers stationed in the area. It was almost demolished until the outbreak of fighting in 1916 prevented its destruction. During the battle, Bavarian troops attempted to drive the French out by dropping grenades down the chimneys but were unsuccessful.
