Souville was one of Rivieres first generation fortresses constructed between 1875-1879 out of limestone, and was later reinforced with layers of earth on top to soften the blow from heavy artillery which had wreacked havoc on the Belgium defenses at Liege. During the fighting at Fort de Vaux, the commanding officer attempted to contact forces at Souville for reeinforcements and supplies, but all means of communication were destroyed by the constant German artillerly bombardments. The advancing Bavarian and Prussian units tasked with capturing Souville came dangerously close when they stormed positions south of the town of Fleury with the help of flamethrowers, but fierce French resistance ultimately thwarted their efforts.
