Fort St. Michel an early fortification built near Verdun to the northeast of the city and is one of the six "panic redoubts" constructed in the mid 1870's. Unlike some of the other early fortifications St. Michel was never modernized, and by the start of the battle its artillery weapons had been removed and relocated for use on the front lines. The fort lies roughly 2.5 km to the northeast of city, and did not see significant action during the battle.
