The library of Congress is perhaps the most well-known institution dedicated to the preservation and digitization of historical records and documents, and for good reason. Not only is the Library of Congress home to the U.S. copyright office itself, it is also the largest Library in the entire world, containing millions of books and manuscripts on countless subjects. Additionally, the library serves the needs of the United States Congress’ research department, and has been an innovator in restoring and maintaining some of the world most precious documents. Almost all of the content within the library is protected by copyright, and therefore it is up to the individual to determine if it falls under public domain.
