Wikipedia is an online encyclopedia with millions of users who access its information every day, however many of them are not aware of, or do not take full advantage of the built-in analysis tools that are at their disposal. One of these is the “view history” tab located near the top left of the page, which allows readers to sort through every version of that article that has been published and compare the changes which have been made to the information over time. If we go back to the very first article written on Digital Public Humanities from the year 2006, we can observe how sparse the page is; containing only a single paragraph, and how little information is available on the subject. By clicking on different versions of the same article throughout the years, readers can note what additions were made when, and document how those edits reflect contemporary events to influence our knowledge and understanding of a given topic. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another incredibly useful feature is the “page statistics” tab, which. conveniently sorts through the article’s edits made by various contributors, and presents them with different visualizations such as pie charts, bar graphs, and rankings. Through the page statistics tool, it becomes much easier to gain a sense of who is actually contributing to the article and in what frequency, which can help users determine the authenticity or credibility of the claims. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, the section entitled “talk”displays the criticisms or concerns that other users have found with the information presented in a wikipedia article, and gives them a space to discuss and address those concerns with the authors. Public engagement such as this is crucial for maintaining accountability, especially since many users tend to take wikipedia information at face value without doing much research elsewhere. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When it comes to conducting research with open AI software such as chatGPT, the lack of these features must be taken into account. Since there is no way to verify who is writing the information, when they wrote it, or have the ability to discuss said information with an author, any data provided by AI programs must be taken with a grain of salt, and confirmed using additional sources. The need for these tools to be integrated becomes increasingly imperative as everyday, more and more users are choosing to get their information from Open AI software than from Wikipedia. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
