By approaching our sources as potential opportunities for data extraction we begin to see both the benefits and drawbacks of this method of research.

Humanists’ relationship with data is different than many others fields because it centers around the mining of data and not necessarily the creation of it. When source information is presented as easily readable, quantifiable data it offers a chance for researchers to pick up on trends, similarities, and discrepancies more efficiently than they would by pouring over pages and pages of text. Areas of interest which can be visually presented such as geographic location, time period, and social relationships take on a new, interconnected meaning that is not always apparent when using traditional methods.

However, alongside its varied potentials, deriving data from humanities sources present a number of unique challenges which researchers must be aware of beforehand. Since humanists’ work often involves the examination of a small group of records taken from much larger collections, it is imperative for researchers to clearly present not only what sources their data is comprised of; but also by what process they went about choosing those sources. Humanists also must be wary of assuming the existence of duplicate information where none exists, i.e. names or places that appear to be the same when in reality are completely different. Although software for normalization is used extensively throughout the field, this step still requires the oversight and occasional intervention of humans.

As Digital Humanists, our obligation is to find new way to interact with pre-existing sources, derive new information from those sources, and use that information to draw new connections.
