I have learned that the ability to create a website is only aspect of catering to a digital audience; it has taught me how to single out potential users by creating personas, how to discover flaws in my methods by conducting user end interviews, and how to storyboard my ideas so I can find ways to improve upon my ideas. I have learned about everything from the Great Chicago Fire, Bracero Immigrant work program, and Japanese internment through a multitude of digital platforms camps in the U.S. I think my favorite website that we reviewed this semester has to be the Raid on Deerfield, just because of how unique its layout is and the depth of interactive features the developers were able to fit into one project. I really enjoyed the art style of that example, and I actually had never even heard of the Raid on Deerfield until that assignment so learning about its story was incredibly surprising.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By far the best part of this course was getting a chance to work on a project which focuses on the area of history I love the most; the Battle of Verdun. This assignment forced me to search out new areas of information surrounding the battle that I had not considered, and my biggest problem was honestly limiting myself to how much I included simply because of time restraints. It has undergone a number of revisions over the semester, however I am very pleased with the final result and I look forward to sharing this with my friends and family, as well as on social media for all history and First World War enthusiasts to enjoy. It initially started out as a simple documentation of a handful of French Fortresses around Verdun, but as I was exposed to more digital public history projects through this course, it made me want to expand upon my own work. I ended up changing the name of the project from Forts of Verdun to Ghosts of Verdun in order to better reflect my addition of a second exhibit which focuses on the monuments to soldiers and civilians built in the years following the First World War. Overall this was one of my favorite classes I have taken at GMU so far and I look forward to advancing my digital public history skills even more down the road.
