One of the places that digital humanists and historians can look to as models of audience interaction are local and community oriented public history sites. In his article Who’s Public? Whose History? What Is the Goal of a Public Historian? author Ronald J. Grele emphasizes the need for historians to recognize the work being done in the public history field by academics as a means to inspire social change or action in the community. Another aspect historians should consider when creating these platforms is openmindenness and the willingness to accept that we do not have all the answers. The goal of engaging and interacting with the audience should not only be to ensure the success of our own projects, but also to listen and learn from what the public can tell us about their own lives and experiences. In Radical Is a Process: Public History Pedagogy in Urban Universities the authors warn about the potential for public history projects to become sites for the reproduction of expertise and authority rather than dialogue with communities. Ultimately, our work as digital historians is most successful when we create tools that can be used in our absence to engage members of the public with one another. Similarly, in Sharing Authority in Online Collaborative Public History Practices, Serge Noiret highlights the benefits of expanding traditional voices of authority to include “citizens history.” Implementing this raises a number of challenges, yet museums have recently found great success by what they call offering a “voice to visitors.” There is no reason to assume that we cannot do the same with our visitors, even though they may be digital ones.

When creating digital public history projects, there is oftentimes a tendency to overlook the importance of what “public” means to the overall success of that project.
